When is my Yorkie Puppy Old Enough to come Home?

Beware of Breeder Claims

Here are some important guidelines that I wish I would have followed when I began my search for yorkies. Do not commit to buying a yorkie until they are at least 8 weeks old. Make sure, if you preview a puppy early and put a percentage down to hold a puppy, that the money is fully refundable should you change your mind.

The yorkie puppy you see at 5 weeks may not be what you expected when you see the puppy again at 8 weeks. Beware if a breeder claims your puppy is "ready early." Some breeders may be trying to get rid of puppies before trouble such as health problems show up, or for other secretive reasons.

Wait to Bring Puppy Home

There are many advantages to waiting until 8 weeks to bring your puppy home:

1) The breeder may have begun potty training- this makes the work easier for you! Yorkie puppies can be difficult to potty train/ housebreak. Why? I believe there are many reasons why yorkies are difficult to train. When potty training or housebreaking a yorkie you must be very consistent. I am sure you have heard of the crate training method.

2) The yorkie will be developed enough to see physical characteristics and facial features. This is very important if you plan to breed your yorkie. The most valued yorkies have a baby doll face, dark rims around the eyes, and plentiful hair. Many yorkies have fine and thin hair.

3) They may (and should) have had their first set of shots. Yorkie puppies will have 3 sets of shots: first set at 6 weeks, second shot at 12 weeks, and third set at 18 weeks. After the first year your will want to get your yorkie shots every year.

I have heard that not all dogs should be breed. That they simply ar enot the best genetic material to make a cute and lovable dog.

While I think this can be true, let sremmeber that sometimes its our faults that make us endearing to those who love us. That said, I hope you have ha da wonderful expereince with your new puppy!.

Cheers,

I agree with you- our faults make us more loveable. I know there are millions of fantastic, loveable dogs in the world who may not be "full bred" or who have considerable flaws who are extremely beloved creatures. The problem is, however, that many dogs do not find homes. This is an incredible problem- and this is why so many dogs are neutered or spayed. I believe that it is a breeder's responsibility to choose the healthiest and in some cases, like yorkshire terriers for example, attractive- dogs bc there are very specific characteristics that are valued and in high demand in this breed. By doing so a breeder can show how much they care about animals by choosing desirable characteristics that will increase the likelihood of the puppies finding a good home.

Thank you for your comment, I regard your opinion highly!

Great advice! Too many people nowadays don't realize the responsibility that comes with owning a Yorkie. This should help!

Check with the vet. She/he can tell you when a yorkie puppy can come home. They can't come home until they are weaned. Sometimes that is 8 weeks, sometimes longer.

My baby girl had a litter of 4 on Feb 8th, This is the first litter and my first time as a breeder ( my yorkie got prego while I was out of town) ... I got my little girl at age of 9 weeks but hher ears were still down, eventually they got up but her sister´s didnt.. what should I do for the little puppies to have their ears up at age of 7 weeks as they are supposed to be?

The yorkies ears should stand again around 6 months. Yorkie puppies' ears normally tilt for a couple of months. Keep the hair on the upper third of the yorkie puppy's ear trimmed very short, to help the ear grow erect.

i also agree with ralph i think not all dogs should be breeds because the animals that are breeds sometimes just get bored and just wants to run around in the park play with other dogs sniff another dogs butt and be a normal dog and have fun unlike breeds who sometimes have to get up at 4 or 5 a clock in the morning and get there hair done just for a competition i love all dogs even i they pee on my carpet cause all dogs need to be treated with respect i love people who have dogs because those people share the same love with there dogs exactly as me and my dog share even if breeds i love all dogs and it's gonna stay that way and no one is ever gonna try to make me not love dogs even if it's my mother but that's never gonna happen cause she loves dogs just as much as i do
