Common Symptoms of Illness of the Teacup Yorkie Dog

Vomiting

A teacup yorkie dog vomits easily, beacause his body and organs are so small, and his intestines are sensitive to change in diet. Any changes should take place very gradually, adding a tablespoonful of the new substance each day until a complete change is made.

Often a new food may take the blame for ‘turning him out’; when it is just that the teacup yorkie dog system has not adjusted to it. Liver in particular has this effect on some Yorkshire terriers.

A yorkie bitch will often vomit partly digested food for her puppies at weaning time, sometimes hours after she has taken it. This is messy and annoying, but a perfectly natural process.

Diarrhea

Diarrhea can be a symptom of many internal disturbances. If the yorkie appears otherwise well, withhold food for a day, giving only glucose and boiled water.

If the situation is improving after 24 hours, give very small quantities of cooked white fish and plain boiled rice six times a day to get the digestion going again.

Dogs will often cause themselves an upset such as this by eating cow and horse manure, or decomposing refuse. Blood-stained diarrhea or extreme looseness, accompanied by vomiting and prostration require veterinary help very quickly.

Keep the ill yorkie warm meanwhile. Veterinary advice is needed. Diarrhea in young yorkie puppies is a serious condition leading to loss of valuable body fluid and dehydration, and should never be neglected. Expert diagnosis is needed, as it may have so many causes.

Jaundice

A yellow tinge to the whites of the eyes, lips, and unpigmented areas of the skin is the danger sign for jaundice which indicates that the liver is not functioning correctly.

It may be caused by inflammation of the liver due to infection or perhaps by some poison. It is a serious symptom and veterinary advice is needed at once.

Yorkies with jaundice will be put on a fat-free diet and your vet will probably need to take a blood sample in order to establish an accurate diagnosis.

Nephritis

This is an inflammation of the kidneys. It can occur as an acute infection in younger yorkies, but is more commonly seen in the older animal due to progressive deterioration of kidney function.

The main sign the owner will notice is copious amounts of pale urine being passed, and a compensating increase in thirst. Vomiting and weight loss are other signs that call for veterinary help. Do not withhold water, but limit the amount given at any time to prevent vomiting.
